Plant Profile
Schizophragma hydrangeoides commonly called Japanese Hydrangea Vine is a self clinging vine with a more refined habit than Hydrangea a. petiolaris. The vine stays flat against a wall or fence unlike the climbing hydrangea which reaches out three feet from the surface. With a mature height of 20-30' it's reddish brown stems exfoliate with age providing winter interest. Large 8-10" hydrangea like clusters of sweetly fragrant pure white flowers cover the vine for six to eight weeks in midsummer. Fragrance is like a mixture of apples and lilies. Moonlight features heart-shaped, coarsely toothed green leaves with silver shading and deep green veining turning a golden amber in the fall. Ideal on a tree, wall, or fence. Grows best in full shade to part sun in fertile moist but well drained soil. Zone 5 to 8
Frans Fontaine Hornbeam was selected for retaining a sleek columnar form into maturity. The trees current season's growth curves inward toward the central leader. In ten years it seldom spreads more than 6 to 8 feet while reaching a height of 20 to 25 feet. It is one of the best choices for restricted areas. European hornbeam has serrated leaves that are dark green in summer changing to yellow gold in autumn. Its smooth, steel gray bark has a muscular character that provides winter interest. The tree has no serious disease or insect problems. It tolerates pollution and soil compaction and makes an excellent street tree. Once established the tree is very drought tolerant. Zone 4 to 8
